Hydraulic Jack Oil with its Fluid Characteristics

Jack oils, as you are aware, are the fluid that Hydraulic Jacks utilize to effortlessly raise any large object with a small applied force.  Hydraulic jacks are used in earthmoving machinery, material handling equipment, and auto shops all over the place.  You'll see that hydraulics is the foundation of this jack's operation.  The purpose of this post is to give you additional information on hydraulic jack oil.  Additionally, it covers hydraulic jack oil characteristics, popular jack oil types, jack oil grades, and more.

What distinguishes hydraulic jack oil from regular hydraulic fluids?  The answer is obvious: hydraulic jack oil is a hydraulic fluid that is used for lubrication, heat transfer, sealing, power generation, and other purposes.  On the basis of their characteristics, we distinguish between these fluids.  Mineral oils that are insoluble in water make up the majority of hydraulic jack oils.  For hydraulic fluid to be used with a hydraulic jack, it must have a few additional characteristics.  The following is a list of some hydraulic jack fluid characteristics.

Viscosity: The hydraulic jack fluids are viscous fluids within the range of 22 cSt to 32 cSt @ 40°C. Maintaining the required viscosity is necessary for the smooth lifting operation of hydraulic jacks and hoisters. When the viscosity reduces, the lubrication property of fluid will decrease and damage the system components. Similarly, when viscosity increases, the jack oil flow will be interrupted and cause difficulty in lift/hoist.

Thermal Stability: Hoists and hydraulic jacks operate at different temperatures.  Therefore, it's critical that the hydraulic system maintain fluid qualities that allow it to function in both extremely hot and cold environments.  At that point, the system must adjust to the changing operating temperature without compromising the jack oil's characteristics.  To increase fluid life, the thermal and chemical stability must be improved.

Non-Corrosive: Most of the hydraulic jacks and hoists will contain metal surfaces. So, if non-compatible hydraulic oil for jacks is used, it can damage the metal surfaces of the jack. This is why non-corrosive hydraulic jack fluids are used.

Filterability: Contaminated jack oil can be a reason for filter blockage. These blockages will resist the flow of fluid through the jack/hoist system and create difficulty in lifting loads. So, the hydraulic jack oil needs to be clean and filterable for smooth and efficient performance.

Hydrolytic stability, fire resistance, anti-wear properties, anti-oxidant properties, etc… are some other required properties for hydraulic jack oil. These jack oil types are normally mineral oil with some added addictives like anti-rust, anti-wear, anti-oxidant, cold flow, etc...  

Recommended oils for hydraulic jacks are mineral or synthetic ISO 32 or ISO 46 hydraulic oils, designed for optimal viscosity and anti-wear properties in various temperatures and conditions. ISO 32 is best for cold weather and portable jacks, while ISO 46 is suitable for warmer climates and heavier loads. Always use fluid specifically labeled as hydraulic jack oil, and never use motor oil or brake fluid, as they can damage the jack's seals.

In hydraulic jacks/hoists, commonly detected problems are due to inappropriate fluid selection and low fluid levels. When the wrong hydraulic fluid is selected or when your system has a low fluid level, it will negatively affect the smooth performance of the hydraulic jack. To eliminate this problem, it is important to check the fluid level regularly and refill/replace the existing fluid with compatible jack oil as required.
